So colorful, crispy and delightfully gluten free...the magic of macarons!
I had a lot of fun doing both styling and photography for this advertising shot for Baked by Melissa especially considering macarons couldn't be more cute and roundly, eye-tempting. And on top of it these macarons are made of gluten free almond flour for all to enjoy!
So the key to this shot was to highlight the ingredients since they are so important to a well-made macaron's crunchiness and creaminess; keeping it simple I picked a neutral background for full focus on the intensity of colors and linear stripes on the macarons.
The roundness of the macarons allowed for some creative play on shape with the middle macaron sitting sideways for a more interesting composition. Shooting close-up was essential to capture the textures of the fluffy gluten free flour and sliced almonds. I also went for a clean lighting to evoke a happy feeling.
By the time I was done shooting, I was inspired to pull out my pastry cookbook only to learn more of the heritage of the macaron. Imagine this….it is generally only made of egg white, almond flour and sugar but is so interestingly delicious. One tale tells that the granddaughter of Catherine de Medici (whose Italian chef first brought the cookie to France upon Catherine's marriage to future King of France Henry II) was supposedly saved from starvation by eating macarons. Now that doesn't sound so bad, does it!
